Creamy Tomato Soup

It's still nice enough in Texas to enjoy a  Fall meal outside.
My iron centerpiece is planted with oregano, parsley and pansies with a mini pumpkin added for the season.
The  pumpkin bowls are by Maxcera from Homegoods and the detail is so pretty on them. They are called Watercolor Pumpkins.   I'm using some homespun fabric napkins tied with raffia and some homespun fabric as a topper.
We tried this delicious soup when we visited Asheville, NC at the Tupelo Honey Cafe'.  My hubby and I both loved it.  Of course, being the cookbook lover that I am, I bought the Tupelo Honey Cafe' cookbook  and this recipe is included.  It's simple, but oh so comforting.  Here's the recipe:

1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
3 cups water
2 T. tomato paste
1 bay leaf
2 t. sugar
1 1/2 t. sea salt
1/2 t. freshly ground black pepper
1 cup heavy cream

Combine tomatoes, water, tomato paste, bay leaf, sugar and salt in a 4-cup heavy saucepan.  Bring to a boil, immediately decrease the heat to medium, and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until mixture lightly coats the spoon.  Whisk in the pepper and cream and continue cooking over medium heat for about 2 minutes or until thoroughly blended.

  17. Hi Kitty,

THANK YOU for sharing this recipe; it looks and sounds delicious!! My husband and I both love creamy tomato soup, and I will definitely try this. It pleases me so much that you enjoyed your trip to North Carolina; I can't help being proud of my home state. :) I wish so much that I could have met you; as you live so far away, I don't know when we would get another chance. Maybe you could attend the next Southern Bloggers Conference; I feel sure we'll have one again next year. :)

Your outdoor table looks lovely and cozy -- just the right setting for creamy tomato soup. Your basket centerpiece is gorgeous! Have a wonderful day.

  18. Oh, yeah...this is MY kinda soup! I LOVE tomato soup! Hated it as a kid, but love it as an adult...especially with a grilled Gruyere cheese sandwich!!! Just for edification, when a recipe calls for "heavy cream", that means just regular cream like whipping cream from the store, right? Not half-and-half, but cream. I have just never seen a carton that reads "heavy cream" on it, so I'm not quite sure. You got those bowls at Home Goods??!?!?!!! I've been to 2 different HGs in the last week and didn't see that pattern. I love those! I think it's the "watercolor" effect that really draws me in. They look great with the plaid linens!

  19. I love creamy tomato soup and yours looks delish! I am going to give this one a try.

  20. Creamy tomato soup sounds perfect for our rainy day we are having. ;-)
    Lovely table setting too!........Sarah

  22. Kitty, I always loved tomato soup growing up and forget to have it now. This will be on the menu next week ;o)

  23. Just had a tomato basil soup yesterday so you can guess I like yours. While the soup sounds great, what I really love is your centerpiece, simple and inviting.

  24. Hi Kitty,

  29. I see this specific blog is over a year old, but I just found it while looking for this recipe. I had at Tupelo Honey this afternoon, and I thought it was better than any I had made myself. I will be making it this week. Thanks

  30. Thanks for telling me about this recipe. I love the Tupelo Honey Café’s pimento cheese, so there’s no reason I wouldn’t like the soup is well. It looks easy and sounds delicious. I also love your bowls, but then I am a big fan of Maxcera dinnerware. Great post! Now, to find the cookbook. I think I will have to have that too!
