Dirt Cake for Earth Day

Use a plastic trowel for serving
To celebrate The Good Earth at Kathleen's Let's Dish!,  I decided to make dirt cake.  I know this recipe has been around for ages and I first received it from my special friend, Joy, when I first moved to Texas, back in 1986.  I took it to a work luncheon once,  put it on the table with the silk flowers in the pot and people thought it was a real plant.  It's fun to serve it with a gardener's trowel, that is kept for only that purpose!!  Little kids love it, and sometimes even my big kids have been known to request this fun dessert.  I do use a plastic pot for this dessert and the crushed cookies on top really do look like dirt.  You can even put in some gummy worms for added fun.  Once, for a shower, my daughter and I used tiny pots and  glass votives that resemble pots, and "planted" tiny silk flowers in each one.   Each guest had  their own individual flower pot.  Here's the recipe:

Wrap the flowers in foil or plastic
1 large bag chocolate sandwich cookies (such as Oreos)
1/2 stick butter (I omit)
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 c. powdered sugar
3 1/2 cups milk
2 small boxes vanilla instant pudding (I use sugar-free)
12 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed

Crush cookies in a food processor (or put in a bag and use a rolling pin.)
Cream together the butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar.
Mix together milk and puddings.
Add whipped topping to cream and pudding mixture.
Layer 1/3 of cookies, 1/3 pudding, etc.  Top should be cookies (dirt).

Use packets of seeds for favors
My teapot watering can, from Lowe's, last year!
Garden gloves and seed packets add to the Earth Day theme.

  1. CUTE, Kitty!

You always come up with the most clever ideas!

Happy soon to be Earth Day!

Have a great week, too, my friend!

  2. What a cute post, Kitty! Can you believe I have never had Dirt Cake! I have meant to make it any number of times and never did. Wonderful idea to display it the way you did too. We have the same watering can! Thanks for sharing with us and enjoy your week.

  3. Wonderful Good Earth idea, Kitty. Great centerpiece.

  4. Hi Kitty
This is definitely my kind of tea party. I've had dirt cake before that had gummy worms on top. Kids would love dirt cake.

  5. I've seen these before, but yours looks way easier to do with the way you wrapped the artificial flowers. The one I saw before had a vial of water you inserted to put a cut stem. It seemed way too hard to do, but I would love to make one your way. Thanks for sharing this adorable idea at my party!

  6. Glad to see recipes from our past. This is such a cute idea and we all love dirt cake...........andi the wednesday baker

  7. So adorable! It would make an adorable cake for a bridal shower!

  8. Oh, I haven't thought about a dirt cake in quite a long time! Yours is so pretty and love how you added the flower.
I'm so glad you like my little fashion plates.
    be a sweetie,

  10. We think so much alike, Kitty! I made the Dirt Cake version of cupcakes last week, with Morning Glory seed packets & this week did the gardening gloves! LOL

Your outdoor dining area looks so welcoming...wish I could sit & share a lemonade with you there.

  11. Tea in the garden is my favorite place off all!! So relaxing and I think your teapot/watering can is adorable!! I am there, in mind and heart!!

  19. Well, butter my head and call me a biscuit! This is just about one of the CUTEST ideas I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!! What a great idea! My husband would be tickled pink if I was to make this for him and serve it this way. My extended family would be overjoyed!!! Just imagine the looks on their faces when the centerpieces suddenly became dessert! A+ for creativity!!!!!!!! I am going to copy and past the recipe into my computer recipe thingy right now and then flag your post for future reference. This is really cool!!!!!
