It was a somewhat cooler day and I headed outside.
My strawberry pitcher, from Sur La Table is a favorite of mine, and it's holding some pretty alstroemeria.
I'm using my beautiful blue and white teapot for my blueberry coffee cake, and my tea is Very Berry organic white, which is a blend of blueberry and raspberry.
This set of dishes holds memories of when my late beloved and I went to a Bed and Breakfast in Wimberley, TX, and they served our food on these pretty Mikasa plates, called Berry Delight. I was absolutely smitten and was able to buy them at Mikasa, when they were in business.
I have this very old cookbook , copyright 1959, that my mom's friend let me have probably when I was in high school. We were at a book sale and she wanted it, but let me have it. I was a cookbook collector from way back. In the book is a recipe for this coffee cake, which was a Junior Second Prize winner in one of the Pillsbury Bake-Off contests.
Yield: makes a 13 x 9-inch cake

Blueberry Boy Bait
I adapted this recipe for ease in preparation and also added some cinnamon and almond flavoring.
Ingredients
- 2 egg whites
- 2 cups flour
- 1-1/2 cups sugar
- 2/3 cup butter
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (my addition)
- 1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring (my addition)
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup blueberries
Instructions
- Into a medium size bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff; set aside.
- Sift flour and sugar into a large mixing. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until the size of small peas. Reserve 3/4 cup of this mixture for the topping.
- To the remaining crumb mixture, add the baking powder, salt, cinnamon, almond flavoring, egg yolks, and milk, and beat with mixer on low speed for 3 minutes.
- Fold the stiffly beaten egg whites into the batter and then spread into a sprayed 13 x 9-inch baking pan.
- Arrange the 1 cup of blueberries over the batter. Sprinkle with the reserved crumb mixture.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes.
- Serve warm with whipped cream or serve plain as coffee cake.
Notes
This was a Junior Second Prize Winner in a Pillsbury Bake-Off.
You may like to add vanilla in place of the almond flavoring, or maybe some lemon zest.
Extra blueberries would be great, too!
My granddaughter Ella, will be 16 soon, and this is her car!
Molly, Cissy and I went to a great- niece's wedding in Tennessee and it was so beautiful. The wedding was under a covered pavilion, with a pond that had a fountain spray, and up the hill was a gorgeous white barn for the reception. It was my niece's daughter that got married. The three girls on the bottom left are all cousins, and daughters of the brothers in the family. We had the best time dancing the night away until the very last song was played.
Thank you for your visit! xo

I'm sharing with these parties:

What a great week you had! A wedding in Tennessee with family. How fun!
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing your outside area for tea today. Your teapot and teacup are beautiful. The special strawberry plate holds such a dear memory for you.
I have to giggle about the Blueberry Bars recipe name. Blueberry Boy Bait is too funny!
Have a lovely week ahead, my friend.
I have a recipe for blueberry boy bait that we use and love too; though mine is quite different from yours. I got mine from an old Cook's Country cookbook. The wedding looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteRecipe sure sounds delish! How wonderful you had a getaway with the girls. Sounds like a lovely wedding and time together. Ella's car is a beauty! Have a great week. XO
ReplyDeleteKitty, your Blueberry Boy Bait looks wonderful, and the name gave me a chuckle! 😊🫐 I love that the recipe came from your treasured 1959 cookbook and has such a sweet history. Your additions of cinnamon and almond flavoring sound delicious. Your blue-and-white teapot and Lakeview teacup are so pretty, and the Very Berry tea is the perfect pairing. I also loved the memories attached to your beautiful Mikasa Berry Delight dishes. I know Ella must be thrilled with her new car and your great-niece’s wedding setting looked beautiful! Wishing you a wonderful week ahead ♥
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh this looks so yummy. Oh I remember the Pillsbury Bake Off Contests. Such amazing recipes. Ella's new car is beautiful. Enjoy the wedding and your trip. Safe travels. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Kitty. What a wonderful week you had with a wedding in Tennessee! The Blueberry Boy Bait bars look delicious and I have fresh blueberries that we pick daily. I must admit I have never heard of this recipe. Love your strawberry plate and outdoor setting. I know Ella is excited over her car and turning sixteen. Wishing you a lovely week!
ReplyDeleteOh Kitty, dancing the night away...you rascal you! I love it! I love to dance and luckily, the Captain does too. My late husband also danced so I'm not sure I can 'trip the light fantastic' any more but I am always willing to get on the dance floor and try. What a beautiful 16th birthday present for Ella...love the photo of you both. You know how I love old recipes and the blueberry boy bait bars look so good...and the recipe fairly easy, altho separating the eggs is a different twist. I'm curious as to how the bars were named, do you know the background? I'm glad your weather is a little cooler and your table and memories are lovely too. hugs my friend
ReplyDeleteHi Kitty,
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of dancing the night away. It is interesting, the past two weddings we attended they chose not to have dancing. The last time I went dancing was at a polka with my husband a couple years ago. :-)
I enjoyed all the photos.
Happy 16 to Ella.

LOL love the name of your sweet treats you made. You set a lovely tea table. I LOVE your birdie teapot. That wedding had to be such fun. Ella's car is awesome. Glad your weather eased up a bit. Supposed to be 100 degrees here tomorrow and with the humidity it's all I can do to just clean my birdbath and hummer feeder then come right back inside all perspired feeling yuck. I absolutely cannot stand this kind of weather. Hopefully the storm we are supposed to get on friday will bring more bearable temps.
ReplyDeleteIt's pick your own blueberry season here, and I made blueberry boy bait last year using a recipe from Smitten Kitchen. Your dessert looks wonderful! I'm glad you enjoyed a getaway with the girls and danced the night away! Ella will surely enjoy her new car. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun name for a treat! It looks delicious...blueberries are my favorite. The wedding looks like a great time. Dancing is the best and I'm sure you had a great time celebrating with family. The bride looks lovely and congrats to your new driver. How exciting!!
ReplyDeleteThat dessert looks so delicious. Your table is set so sweet. Enjoy your summer Kitty and with such a wonderful family too!
ReplyDeleteJuly is national blueberry month and your recipe sounds good.
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures of the family.
All the best Jan
Your teapot is so pretty! I've always been a fan blue and white transferwares.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sweet 16th Birthday to Ella!
How delicious. The name is so funny. Your teacup is adorable. Ella's car is so pretty. She must be so excited.
