Fig Bars

There's a change in the air!

Could it be that Fall is finally arriving?  I've made some Fig Bars using a jar of my homemade Fig Preserves, which you can find here.  The pretty table covering is from my mom, and so is the napkin. My cottage teapot goes so nicely with my teacup.

The Royal Albert teacup is from the Woodland Series and my friend Rosie gifted it to me from her Mom's collection.

In my teapot is this delicious tea,  again from my friend Margie.  It perfectly complements the fig bars.   Thank you, Margie!

The story on this hanging basket is that every plant I had in here... asparagus fern, spider plant, then coleus, which was eaten in one night, as food for some critter.  I decided to put two stems of faux ferns in to save myself grief and money!

Fig Bars

Fig Bars

I had a jar of homemade fig preserves to use, but you could use store bought, or maybe apple butter or pumpkin butter.

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 t. salt
  • 1/4 t. baking soda
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 jar of fig preserves (or any flavor of preserves)

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and brown sugar. Mix in remaining ingredients until crumbly. If needed, add about 1-2 t. water. Press half the mixture into a greased 8 or 9" square pan. Spread with the filling. Top with the remaining crumb mixture and press lightly. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

Notes

This recipe is easily doubled to bake in a 9 x 13" pan.

My blessings for this past week are:

Top left:  Attending Ella's volleyball game with Ella's other grandma.
Top right and center:  Celebrating my daughter's early October 1st birthday.
Bottom: Harper finished 3rd in a mountain biking race in Austin, TX

Thank you for your visit!  xo

  2. Wishing we had some true fall weather here, Kitty. I bet those fig bars and tea are true fall flavors to enjoy. Love that little cottage teapot. Let me warn you, one of my sisters even had faux flowers chomped! But hey, those ferns are pretty, and realistic. Happy Birthday to Molly on the 1st!

  5. I’d love to join you for tea and a fig bar Kitty! I’ve long admired your sweet cottage teapot and it’s perfectly paired with your pretty Royal Albert bird teacup. You need a wildlife or Ring camera to capture your midnight plant snacker. I can’t imagine asparagus fern is especially tasty or fun to eat with the texture of the fronds. I’ve been bringing in the hummingbird feeders every night for months as we had racoons emptying the feeders and drinking the nectar…we caught them red handed on our Ring. Happy birthday wishes to Molly and congrats to Harper. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead. ♥

  6. Kitty your fig bars look so good along with your pretty tea pot and tea cup...they all look so cozy and Fall-ish. I hear ya on the plant eaters...I have been using faux flowers here and there and have actually gotten compliments on my "healthy" flowers. LOL. Of course I confess but it is still fun. Happy Birthday to sweet Molly and I know you are proud of Harper! Have a great and wonderful week...hugs and Blessings always Kari @ Me and My Captain

  7. What a charming fall tea setting! So glad that I mailed the tea samples to you before the Canadian postal workers went on strike again. Here's hoping this strike won't last long...

  8. Hi Kitty, I love your cottage teapot and the beautiful RA bird teacup! The fig bars look delicious. I would love to join you for tea. Your grands are precious and I enjoy seeing their photos and accomplishments! Wishing you a lovely week!

  9. Oh Kitty I have a cottage collection that resembles your teapot. I always enjoy setting them out. Your whole setting looks so inviting.
Your fig bars look so delicious. I wish I could have one!
Do you have a fig tree? I ask because you said you made your own fig preserves. When we visited sweet man’s sister in Texas she had a fig tree. But the critters enjoyed the figs faster than she could pick them.
Enjoy your last day of September!

  14. Kity, this post is pulling at my heart strings. My precious mother collected tea cups and had the most amazing fig trees in her garden. She made the best fig bars! Thanks for sharing this post.

  15. I love fig bars and anything with oatmeal in it is a plus for me. I wasn't sure the fern wasn't real so I think it was a great idea! Especially with hungry critters and almost the end of growing season. It's been unusually warm here so we've been loving the extended summery weather.

  16. Yes there is a change, Kitty!Today here in Cornwall, UK the wind is a howling round the house with storm ' Amy' which has reached us. Time to cosy up! I like to make those fig bars with dates too, sometimes. I reckon they come into the category of ' healthy cakes' either way!

  17. I've never had a fig bar but I love to use fig jam in various recipes, and your bars sound perfect with a cup of tea Kitty! Your teapot and cup are so pretty, where do you possibly keep them all? Good idea with the faux fern, they make so many realistic faux plants and flowers now!
