Today I'm sharing a very old family favorite recipe from my Farm Journal Christmas Cookbook. It's so easy, if you need a quick one.
I bought this cookbook from Lazarus department store back in 1973, before any of my children were born. Yes, I've loved cookbooks forever. The tea set was from my youngest son, when he was just a little guy. The poinsettia plate was painted by my Great Aunt Kitty, dated 1969. The beautiful angel on my sofa is from a dear friend, who has passed away.
My Goebel angel and Jesus is from my dear Dad, from 1979. Sometimes I'm good about writing on the bottom of things; sometimes, I'm not!
Isn't the saucer to this teacup, so pretty and old fashioned looking?
The teacup is Gracie Bone China, and looks so vintage.
Yield: 3-4 dozen, depending on how big you make them
Chocolate Crackles
Even though I've tried chocolate crackles from scratch, my family still prefers this recipe, and it's so easy! This recipe is a favorite of my sons and grandsons.
Ingredients
- 1- 18.25 ounce box of devil's food cake mix (see note)
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1/2 cup shortening
- Confectioners sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease your cookie sheets.
- Combine cake mix, eggs, water, and shortening. I mix this with my mixer until everything is blended.
- Shape dough into balls the size of small walnuts (I make mine large walnuts, and only get 36 cookies!)
- Roll the balls in confectioners sugar.
- Place on greased baking sheets, leaving space between the cookies to spread a little. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 8-10 minutes.
Notes:
Since cake mixes have cut down in size, I keep some extra boxes in my pantry, to add the difference to equal an additional 3 ounces that is needed. I weighed out the 3 ounces and it makes a heaping 1/2 cup of cake mix, or a 1/2 cup if it's packed down and leveled off.
Thank you for your visit, and Merry Christmas to you! xo

Don't you love when you see that you wrote a date and name on the item you received many years ago :-) I do that with Christmas ornaments, and it makes me smile when I see who gave it to me. My mom used to make those cookies! Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and many blessings in the New Year.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blog
ReplyDeleteIt is so strange this year, but we have not made one Christmas cookie! I don't know if a year has ever gone by since Zach was born that we didn't do Christmas cookies. It has just been such a peaceful, serene time, with no pressure, and I guess I have gotten lazy! LOL! Oh, well, I make them often throughout the year, so maybe my family will forgive me. May God bless you, dear friend!
ReplyDeleteWow, how easy! And thank you for mentioning that the cake mixes are smaller now, so many sneaky companies putting less product in their packaging! Your vignettes are always so pretty and special. I wish you and your family a blessed and Merry Christmas Kitty!

ReplyDeleteIt ia true. You need to realize our old recipes won't turn out as well now since the mixes are smaller.A friend pointed out that her Rum cake didn't turn out well. She said she would buy two boxes of cake mix the next time.
ReplyDeleteI love chocolate crinkles.
I LOVE anything old fashioned! Your Christmas plate is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe, Kitty!!
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Kitty! The cake mix companies have certainly made us work harder to make these wonderful, old recipes! I'll bet their delicious!
