Date Logs

Is there anyone out there that loves anything with dates, as much as I do??  Oh, how I think of my mom when I eat anything with dates, as we both loved them.  We can share a cup of vanilla cinnamon tea, if you'd like.

This cute Santa teapot was something I got last year at a gift exchange.  Isn't it cute??

This was one of my first Santas that my daughter gave me.  The calendar year that's in his lap is from 1996. That popcorn is really old!!! Don't you love his nightshirt and cap, his bunny slippers, and his spectacles?

This pretty teacup is called Stechcol by Gracie Bone China.

The saucer is just as pretty as the teacup, and looks so vintage.

Yield: recipe says 48, but I get 32
Author: Kitty, but recipe is from my Farm Journal Christmas Cookbook
Date Logs

Date Logs

I bought this cookbook back in 1973, before I had any children. These cookies are ones that I could eat every day. My late beloved mom and I loved anything with dates, and I always think of her.

  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup chopped, pitted dates (I use a heaping cup, which is an 8 ounce bag from Aldi, but I never buy the pre-chopped ones)
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 3 eggs, well beaten

  1. Sift together dry ingredients (I just use a whisk to do this).
  2. Stir  in dates, walnuts and eggs.
  3. Pour into a greased 9" square pan.
  4. Bake in a 325 degree oven for 35-40 minutes.
  5. Cool, and cut into logs.  Roll in powdered sugar.

  1. Your Santa and the china are really cute and festive looking. The date logs sound sound perfect for the holidays. The recipe looks so easy to make too. Thanks for the recipe Kitty and enjoy the week.

  2. Loving Santa! I have refrained so far from purchasing another Santa this year but not sure how long that will last. LOL! Loving the pictures and too are busy baking. Hugs and blessings dear Kitty. Cindy

  3. I'm loving your Santa cup and saucer, Kitty ... vintage Santas are my favorite Christmas treat!

  4. Oh...I do love dates. It's been ages since I've had date logs! I love to eat the Medjool dates plain and simple, too. Your Christmas Santa is fun and how special that it came from your daughter. Hope you have a grand week!

  5. Oh yes, I too love dates! My mother loved cooking with dates and so do I. I make a few things for Christmas with dates in them. My dark fruit cake gets its colour and flavour partly from the dates in it and of course, sticky date pudding has dates. I make both as well as some cookies. Your table is very festive with your Santas and the teacup really is a pretty one. Thank you for sharing the recipe for Date Logs. I know I would like them! Thank you for sharing at my party and have a wonderful week! Christmas hugs...Sandi

  6. The artwork on your teacup and saucer, Kitty, reminds me of those gorgeous vintage calendars of yesteryear. Why I wouldn't mind at all a cup of cinnamon tea and a few morsels of your date logs. The sweet Santa teapot is fun and as for the Santa, he is his bunny slippers.

  7. Cute teapot and gorgeous teacup! How charming!

    1. I forgot to say your recipe looks mouthwatering and I also love your pretty tablecloth. Blessings!

  8. I love everything about this Santa-themed tea time: the Santa from your daughter (can't believe that the popcorn is older than some of your grandkids! LOL), vintage-style tea set, and the super cute Santa teapot. Next week, I'll be sharing my (small) collection of Santa teapots!

  9. I'm not much on dates, but your Santa teapot stole my heart! Adorable Kitty!!

  10. Kitty, dates are delicious! Somewhere I have a recipe for cookies with dates. They were so good! Oh your teapot and Santa are so sweet. And gorgeous tea cup!! xo

  11. This girl is dates all the way!!!
I absolutely, positivity love dates over anything else!
    Sigh...those look amazing. :-)

  12. I'm actually not a big fan of dates but I love that Santa teacup. It is so cute.

  13. Oh Kitty - I am also a date lover from 'way back'. =D These simple cookies sound mighty tasty. No doubt I could eat them daily too...and your cinnamon vanilla tea sounds perfect to enjoy with them. Your Santa teapot is just the cutest...seeing it made me giggle out loud. I love all your pretties and beautiful tablescapes!

  14. Ahhhhhh, memories of eating date nut bars with my family members. Over the kitchen sink, to avoid getting powdered sugar on the floor! How I miss those days! Your recipe is similar to mine: batter is stiff, hard to stir, but so worth it. Merry Christmas, Ms Kitty!

  15. Such a cute teapot and that teacup is darling!

  16. I love dates and your Santa is really cute.
I got some cinnamon tea as a gift this week. It is delicious.
    Merry Christmas

  17. Oh, goodness! The logs look wonderful and the tea sounds so yummy. I have been drinking chai, have you tried it? I think the one I have has vanilla and cinnamon, but I can't remember for sure. Anyhow, it is so tasty. So wonderful to visit with you, sweet friend. It is always such a pick-me-up to come here to your comforting blog.

  18. Your date logs sound so good Kitty. I love your teacup and saucer, yes, so vintage looking. The Santa teapot and your Santa make a great setting for your tea. Hope you are enjoying the sweet Christmas season.

  19. Kitty, Your Santa is adorable, I love the bunny slippers! Your teacup and Santa teapot is adorable too. I do love dates and am sure I would love those cookies, my hubby however would not! I miss being able to make treats and send them with him to the office as there is no working there anymore. ♥

  20. I come here as much for the tea and sweets as I do for the vignettes you create, Kitty. This is adorable! We love figs, so I'm sure we'd love the date logs too, although Mr. P. is funny about nuts in baked goods.

  21. I simply love your Santa tea pot and beautiful tea cup and saucer.

  22. Such a lovely Christmassy post.
Great photographs and a tasty recipe.
    Thank you.

    Continued Happy December Wishes.

    All the best Jan

  23. Oh how sweet Kitty. Your Santa teapot is darling. So many lovely pieces to enjoy during Christmas..Wonderful recipe as well. Your tea cups are so charming. Merry Christmas dear friend. xo

  24. You can add me to the list of those who love anything with dates! These sound wonderful with the walnuts. You have so many beautiful Christmas things, Kitty. I especially like the cheerful Santa teapot! Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas, Kitty!! ♥

  25. I love dates, Kitty. When I was growing up the local bakery made date nut bars and I could not get enough of them. I ate the best fresh dates in France.
Your recipe sounds easy enough but I'm not sure I could find anything other than chopped dates here. I live in a small town.
I love your Santa tea pot and sweet cup and saucer.
    Wishing you a lovely Christmas.

  26. Whoops! Don't know what happened. My comment got eaten! Anyway...I've not eaten dates in years and years. I remember how much I liked them, though. Now I want to buy some and see what kind of trouble I can get into with them! Your cookies sound like a good start! Seems to me that your Mom was really onto something!
