Irish Soda Scones

My home is decorated for St. Patrick's Day, and I'm serving some Irish Soda Scones. Would you like to join me?  I have some Irish Breakfast tea for us, and some Kerrygold butter for spreading.  The tiny teapot says Cork County, Ireland, on the bottom, where my Great Grandmother was from.

My sister sent this darling wicker teapot planter and I put a shamrock plant in it.  My leprechaun kissing couple were from my dear Mom.

My Mom also gave me this pretty candle holder that Had been her Mom's.

This vintage Johnson Bros Roland teacup is a favorite with it's Celtic design.

These two dear friends treated me to lunch at a French cafe', and we all had chicken, mushroom and spinach crepes.  I am truly blessed with friendships.

Yield: 8 very large scones

Irish Soda Scones

Irish Soda Scones

These scones have a light, fluffy texture, but with the tastes of Irish Soda bread. They are yummy with some Kerrygold Butter.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 stick cold butter
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk (See NOTE)
  • Sparkling Sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, granulated sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut butter into small pieces; work into flour mixture with your fingers or a pastry cutter until dough resembles coarse meal. Add currants, caraway seeds, and buttermilk; stir until just combined.
  3. Scoop 1/3 cup-size mounds of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced 3 inches apart. Sprinkle with Sparkling Sugar. Bake until bottoms are golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely on sheet.

Notes

Next time I will decrease the buttermilk to 3/4 cup, and make 10-12 smaller scones.

Thank you for your visit!  xo

  6. Kitty, your post is a delight! Everything is so cute and very Irish. My hubby's grandmother came from Ireland too but I'm not sure what part. Your scones would be a treat here! Hubby loves scones and soda scones would be especially nice. I have some lemon curd in the refrigerator that would be tasty on them. You are blessed with a lovely family and friends! Thanks for the recipe and Happy March, dear Kitty!

My grandfather's family was from Cork and so was my hubby's grandfather's family. Maybe they all knew each other, haha! It really is a small world. So nice to be treated to lunch with friends.
