Tea and Pizzelles and Pot Roast and Vegetable Beef Barley Soup



It's a chilly but sunny day and a perfect time for tea and cookies. I always make pizzelles for one of my nephews and mail them for his January birthday.  You can find the recipe here.  There are always a few that won't fit...lucky me! Constant Comment tea is my tea for today, which is such a perfect wintry flavor. The little Goebel figurine is another that my dad bought me, and my mom gave me the rusty looking votive snowflake holder.  My sister gave me the teapot. 

Pizzelles remind me of snowflakes and look perfect on my snowflake plate, a pattern from Kroger years ago.


Friendly Village by Johnson Bros is another favorite winter pattern.  



I do believe I could eat  pot roast every single week in the winter.  My favorite recipe for it can be found  here, and is perfect for the slow cooker.

 

My son and I had two meals each of the pot roast, and I still had a chunk of meat left and I made a vegetable beef barley soup with it.  I put the leftover meat, leftover gravy, a can of petite diced tomatoes, a 12 ounce bag of frozen mixed veggies, and about 1/2 cup of barley into the pot, along with some water, and slow cooked it for several hours.  It was so good!  I do not like to waste food, and with the price of groceries these days, I try to use every bit that I can.

As far as not wasting, I also save extras of fabrics that I don't use.  I'm kind of a hoarder of fabric, but an organized one, as I do have similar colors coordinated into bins.  The print in this rag quilt was from one that I did for Caiden (he's now a senior in high school!) when he was a baby.  I didn't have enough of it leftover, but did have another saved fabric of the red flannel to get a large enough baby blanket.  We have a Bella House nearby, which houses homeless pregnant women and they are in need of blankets, bibs, and bottles.  I certainly can make lots of bibs from leftover flannel that I have and make more blankets.

  1. What an angel you are, Kitty, for making the blankets and bibs...and pizzelles! I swear, your family just gets more beautiful- all of you- with each picture you post. Congrats to Caiden on academic excellence. I love all your family mementos as you treat yourself. Your roast and soup are favorites of ours too, and I appreciate the comment of not wanting to waste anything. We're having two days of planned electric maintenance and I'm waiting for the end of today before deciding what food must be tossed. The first (last Th) outage was 8 hrs (!), and today's is anticipated the same (hoping for the best, planning for the worst).

  2. Kitty, I so agree with Rita! I know your time and sewing skills are appreciated. I'm a hoarder too but not as organized. :) Both the pot roast and soup look so good and comforting, especially with our more winter-like temperatures.   3. Hi Kitty, your pizzelles do look like snowflakes and your tea vignette is so cute and wintery! How kind and thoughtful you are to make quilts and bibs for the shelter, I know they are much appreciated. I used to make pot roast all the time but haven't made it in ages, I must put it on the menu soon and wow how smart to make soup with the leftovers, great idea!

  4. Oh yes, I think I could happily eat pot roast quite often too; we usually use our left overs to make a "roast beef" pot pie.

    How do you package the pizzelles so that they survived the mail transit intact?

  10. Thank you Kitty for once again showing us around your tea table. All with good taste and memories of your family offerings.
    I also really like to make pieces with scraps of fabric using patchwork methods. This Christmas I made 14 warm catching gloves to offer to children and grandchildren.
    I can imagine your joy with grandson Caiden's good successes. It is the grandchildren who give us strength to live!

  15. I admire how you attend your grandchildren's functions! You are one proud grandmother, and you should be proud! I think I could eat pot roast every week during winter, too, and making vegetable barley soup from the leftovers is a great idea.

  19. Now I'm wanting pot roast :-) I haven't made it a long while, so I'm adding it to the menu for next week. We just enjoyed some pizelles that a friend gave us for Christmas and I froze most of them. They freeze very well. Well done to Caiden!
