Happy 89th Birthday to My Mom

I was in Ohio this past week to celebrate my dear Mom's 89th birthday!!  Doesn't she look so cute?  I made her favorite angel food cake and topped it with her favorite frosting.  For our dinner we had, at Mom's request: Sloppy Joe's, green beans, cole slaw, pink raspberry lemonade, and the cake with ice cream and homemade hot fudge sauce.    My sister made  Strawberry Whipped Sensation Pie, also.  Mom loved it all!

My sister set up the buffet for her, with fun props, pretty paper plates and napkins, and the counted cross stitch that she made years ago.

We made this cake pedestal from a thrifted candlestick that Mom had bought years ago, and a new plate ($2.50) from Big Lots.  Mom loved the plate so much.  it went so well with the paper plates.

Here's Mom's favorite cake.  My sister and I love it, too!  The recipe for the Speedy Meringue Frosting can be found here.

Here's a selfie with me, my brother, Mom, and my sister.

Here we are using our props:  My sister (holding my niece's baby, our great nephew, and my Mom's newest great grandson,  my niece, me, Mom, and my nephew.

I had to get my nephew's girlfriend in the pic, who is on the left.  She was sweet enough to take our pictures, and then she did a timed selfie of all of us.

Valentine's Treats from Cissy and Nana's Bakery

Please join Cissy and I for a Valentine Day tea, won't you?

Just look at these beautiful cupcakes that my darling granddaughter made!!!  Aren't you impressed??  She used our Russian piping tips, and she did a great job, don't you think?  She had lots of pretty cupcakes to take home to her family, but I saved a few, because I can't resist desserts!

This beautiful tea cozy comes from my friend, Bernideen's Etsy Shop.  You can find information on them at Bernideen's blog.  She has so many pretty styles to choose from.  Bernideen's Etsy Shop is on her sidebar.

I thought my Johnson Brother's Rose Chintz or my Royal Albert Petit Point teacups would be perfect for our tea.

Here's another close-up of these gorgeous cupcakes!  My son who lives here with me, said, "they're too pretty to eat!"  However, that didn't stop us from eating one!

Yield: Enough to frost 24 cupcakes

American Buttercream

When using the Russian piping tips, the buttercream must be very stiff in order for the flowers to come out perfectly.  Frost the top of the cupcakes first so that there is a base for the flowers to adhere to.  There are lots of tutorials on the internet to show you how to do it.

ingredients:

1 cup (2 sticks) room temperature butter
4 cups powdered sugar
1-2 tablespoons milk, or cream
2 teaspoons vanilla

instructions:

Beat the butter with an electric mixer until creamy.
Add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time.
Add the milk  or cream, and vanilla and beat until incorporated.
Divide the buttercream into bowls, if using food coloring.  Leave the buttercream a little streaky to make the flowers more interesting.

The week before, Cissy made some Valentine Bark, inspired from Mary at Home Is Where The Boat Is.  You can find Mary's directions for this here.   Last year, we made her Bunny Bark, and we just loved it!  This bark is so tasty because it has a base of graham crackers, which gives the bark a nice crunch.  I'll never make the all chocolate bark again after trying this version.

I also made this book for my  sister when I was in Ohio with my mom.  I was inspired by Lauren at Wonderfully Made.  This was a fun project.  You can check out Lauren's directions for the folded book art, by going here.  She also has a double folded heart, too.

Last, but not least, I'm sharing a picture of my late beloved and I when we were high school sweethearts!  I miss my Valentine!

Thank you for your visit!  xo

Creepy Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

My fun witch is our hostess for today!  Cissy and I made cupcakes with gummy fingers that Cissy stuck in the frosting.  Won't you join us?

I made this towel years ago and I thought it would make the perfect table covering.

Here's Cissy with two of the three plates of cupcakes that she was able to take home to her siblings.  It was her idea to make red velvet cupcakes, and you can find that recipe here Don't you just know that she's loved when she comes home? The gummy fingers came from Target.

Yield: Enough to frost 24 cupcakes

Cream Cheese Frosting

This frosting is so yummy and Cissy wanted a cream cheese frosting for our red velvet cupcakes.  Cissy used some red frosting to add for "blood".  You can see my son's cupcake in the background with a hand coming out.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened
  • 1 (8-ounce) package of cream cheese, softened
  • 4-5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Put the butter and cream cheese in a bowl and beat with a mixer. Add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, and beat well. Add the vanilla and mix.

Teddy Bears at the Beach Cupcakes

The grands that came over for Cooking/Art Camp this week had been wanting to make Teddy Bears at the Beach Cupcakes again.  We do this every year, but this Nana aims to oblige!  My beach towel and some ice tea, along with some cute cupcakes take me away.

This time, the kids decorated using trays and I used a plastic tablecloth on my coffee table.  We just pulled up small chairs, and they could reach all their itmes that I put out.  The above cupcakes were decorated by Cissy.  She had one of the teddy bears fishing for a cupcake flavored fish.  The ones are the right are playing volleyball on the beach.  The kids made balls by rolling some fruit roll-ups into a ball shape.  They're so creative!

Caiden had some teddy bears, on the left,  playing volleyball.  he used a piece of fruit roll-up for his net.  The poor teddy bear on the right got attacked!  Oh, those kids!!

Smile, Harper!!  She's ready to eat her cupcake after lunch!

Have any of you tried this iced tea?  If you like sweet tea, without calories, this is for you!  I find this at my local Kroger's , at $1.99 a box.

Buttercream Frosting

This is a super easy frosting for decorating cupcakes or sugar cookies. My son, Mike, used a little powdered sugar to make froth on the "waves". The happy teddy bear on the left is riding his surf board, made from a fruit roll-up, but the poor little teddy bear on the right was attacked by a shark!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 5-6 tablespoons milk (plus more, if needed)
  • food coloring

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cream together the butter and powdered sugar with an electric mixer. Add the vanilla and milk. The frosting should be fairly thick. Add the food coloring to your desired color. If the frosting thickens, add a little milk.

My Mom's 88th Birthday and Meeting Michele

I recently went to Ohio to celebrate my Mom's 88th Birthday.  That's my sister, Amy, on the left with my Mom and I.  We took her to the Morgan House, and had a wonderful lunch.

Isn't my Mom so cute?  She bought this pretty dress to wear for her birthday lunch, and then before I left for home, she gave it to me!

Here's a picture of my chicken salad, with a side garden salad with a fresh strawberry dressing.  We each had a pot of tea, and I chose Blackberry Sage, Mom had Apricot, and Amy had Wild Blueberry.

Look who showed up to meet us!!  My friend, Michele, from The Nest at Finch Rest, surprised us!!  I had texted Michele to tell her where we were going, hoping that she could come by.  Michele and I have always wanted to meet in person.  Of course, we already knew each other well from blogging, but meeting in real life was such a treat.  My Mom and sister loved Michele right from the start, and she stayed and had a pot of tea with us.   Michele was too kind and brought my Mom a gift that she had made, with the instructions to open later.

Here's Mom at home,  opening her gift from Michele.

The gift was a darling pitcher (which my mom collects) with a pretty floral arrangement.  Wasn't that sweet of Michele?  I placed it on my Mom's nightstand.

My Mom always wants me to make her an angel food cake with her favorite Speedy Meringue Frosting.

Singing Happy Birthday to this sweet lady!

My Mom and I had a day to spend together because my sister had to work.  I was down in the basement doing some laundry and this quilt and sham set was calling to me.  I brought it up to see if mom would like to change out her quilt on her bed, and she did.  It gave her a pretty summery feel to her room.  The green quilt at the foot of the bed was found down in the basement, too. Yes, it was such fun shopping the house!

One evening we did the fun tiles that my son, Mike, and I had done this summer with the grands.  My nephew, Shane, joined in for the fun project.  He was so sweet and asked to create one together with his grandma.  the bouquet of flowers behind Shane were a gift from him to his Gram.

Happy 88th Birthday to my beautiful Mom, sitting on her pretty patio.  I was so happy to be able to share her birthday with her!

Now I am off to Breckinridge, CO, to vacation with my youngest son, Kevin, DIL, Kristen, and granddaughter, Harper.

Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies at Nana's Cooking Camp

Three of my grands and I decided to make our very favorite soft sugar cookies.  When I mentioned the name of the cookies, they all said, "yeah"!!  The daisies in my lady vase are from my garden.  They're a special variety that do well in Texas.  I started with three plants and now I have a whole row of them.

Doesn't this pretty teacup that my sister gave me, look perfect with the cookies?  I think so, too!

Don't the kids look proud with their bakery cookies?  Yes, we get sprinkles all over, but it's so worth it.

The dough for these cookies chills for an hour, which gives us time to play several rounds of Uno.  You can see how the kids have grown from this post.  I'm sharing the recipe again, in case you'd like to make some big, or little kids happy!

Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies

Cookies

4 1/2 c. flour
4 1/2 t. baking powder
3/4 t. salt
2 sticks butter, softened
1/2 c. shortening (I used butter-flavored)
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 eggs
5 t. vanilla
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder & salt & whisk together.  In bowl  of mixer, combine the butter, shortening & sugar & beat until soft & fluffy, about 3 minutes.  Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each & scraping down the bowl   Blend in the vanilla.  With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients mixing until incorporated & evenly mixed.  Cover & chill for 1 hour.

When you are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Line baking sheets with silpats or parchment paper.  Scoop the dough into about a 2" ball & roll.  I used my ice cream scoop for this part.  Flatten the cookies slightly & space them about 2-3" apart.  Bake 10-12 minutes.   Don' t overbake!  The cookies should remain very light in color.  Let cool on baking sheet for a few minutes & then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Frosting
4 c. powdered sugar
1/4 c. butter, softened
2 t. vanilla
5-6 T. milk (plus more, if needed)
food coloring
sprinkles

Cream together the powdered sugar & butter with an electric mixer.  Add the vanilla & milk.  The frosting should be fairly thick.  Divide into bowls for coloring & tint.  Spoon the frosting onto the cooled cookies.  (Add a little milk if the frosting thickens.)  Top with sprinkles before the frosting sets.
Store in an airtight container.  These cookies will stay soft & delicious for several days, if they last that long!!!

Yield: about 3 dozen good-sized cookie

On June 30th my Mom celebrated her 87th birthday and my sister and I took her to a restaurant that had the most beautiful patio, with a waterfall, and all these gorgeous flowers and plants.

My Mom is always coordinated from head to toe, and always has on a pretty belt, too.  You can see that she wore pretty yellow sandals in the above photo.
