Chocolate Cherry Cake and a Cherry Teacup

Today I'm having tea and cake in my bedroom.  I have to admit that in reality, I have breakfast and tea in bed every single morning.  My late beloved and I started this practice, after our kids all left home, and it's something that I continue to do. There's something so indulgent about breakfast in bed, even though I have to get up and make it!

This darling teacup is from my friend Deborah, that blogs at The Beautiful Matters.  When she visited Texas for a wedding, we  met and she gifted me with this teacup.  I just love the cherries on the front and the checkerboard design.    Thank you so much, Deborah.  She also gave me a gift bag with eight different Harney & Sons Organic teas.  Today I had the Assam Black Tea, which is described as "revitalizing".  It was the perfect complement to my Chocolate Cherry Cake, which is in honor of my cherry teacup.

Deborah and I met in a French Cafe, that I wrote about here.

I wish I could share a piece of cake with Deborah, and we could sit and chat some more!

The recipe for this cake came from an article in The Dallas Morning News from April 24, 1996.  This cake comes together very quickly, and it's really tasty.  Although I make many things from scratch, I am not a food snob (except for a certain brand of ketchup and also,  freshly grated nutmeg!!).  I never mind using a cake mix or some other prepared products.  I hope you give this recipe a try!

Chocolate Cherry Cake
  • Cake:
  • 1 Devil's Food cake mix
  • 21 oz. can cherry pie filling
  • 1 tsp. almond extract (may use vanilla)
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • ICING:
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 5 tbsp. butter
  • 1/3 c. milk
  • 6 oz. chocolate chips

Baking Instructions

  • For cake:
  • Mix together by hand. Put into greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Do not mix too much. Batter will be thick. Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees. Ice while warm.
  • For icing:
  • Combine sugar, butter and milk in a saucepan.  Cook until mixture comes to a boil, stirring constantly.  Cook, stirring, 1 minute longer.  Remove from heat and add chocolate chips and stir until smooth. May put on cake right out of oven.

  14. What a precious cup with a precious memory to go along with it, Kitty! It reminds me of the white coffee mugs that we had when I was little. I loved those things!!
That cake is divine sounding & I have everything on hand to make it, too. I will try it soon.
Like Nancy at Two Cottages & Tea, we've had snow today, too. I am sooo sick of it & really need some warm, comfort food.

  15. I'm always rushing on weekday mornings, but I'd like to try having having tea and breakfast in bed on the weekend! The charming cherry teacup from Deborah is perfect for your kitchen and the chocolate cherry cake looks delish!

So which ketchup brand are you not a fan of? Recently, there was hoopla over French's ketchup because they use tomatoes from Ontario. I didn't even know that French's produces ketchup too!

  16. The gifted teacup from Deborah is sweet, I know how much you like red. I don't know if I'd like breakfast in bed but in the living room on the lazyboy and my feet up is usually where I have mine.
    A delicious looking chocolate cake!

  18. Hi Kitty,

Your breakfast tray looks so pretty, and I love the two bears on your bed. :) I don't believe I've ever had breakfast in bed unless I was in the hospital. ;) It does sound very nice, though. The cherry teacup is charming and such a thoughtful gift from Deborah. I remember reading the post when you two met. The chocolate cherry cake looks and sounds delicious! I'm not a food snob either and am not above doctoring a cake mix when the recipe calls for it. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I hope you have a wonderful week, my friend.

    Warm hugs,

  25. The teacup is perfect for you, Kitty! I'm so glad you two beautiful ladies got to meet. Your cake looks so yummy. I'm not a food snob either although there are certain brands I will not replace with another. {Ketchup being one.} I never have breakfast in bed although it sounds lovely. I do however get my mug of coffee and sip on it first thing in the morning while watching a design show in bed. ;-) Have a beautiful day and thank you for sharing.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  26. What sweet treasures that lovely lady gave you. Isn't Deborah amazing? I loved her from the first time we connected in blogland. I am so happy you were able to meet! You two are just beautiful, inside and out. I hope to one day meet both of you in person, too - but will probably be Deb first, as she only lives north in Michigan. It's a tiny tad bit more doable. Unless you visit family in Columbus again - I cannot EVER EVER EVER let my intimidating mean grumpy old landscaping provider make me miss meeting a good blogging pal ever again. I still kick myself for missing that opportunity. *sigh*

Thanks for the recipe, chocolate and cherry go so perfectly together and I have such a sweet tooth, may need to bake today now! As always, you inspire me to get in that kitchen and create! Hugs and love. ♥

I love reading about bloggers who meet in "real life." I think that is so sweet. You gals look adorable. The cake looks delish, I giggled at "food snob." I agree, if it tastes good, isn't that what it is about? Love the vintage Americana look of that teacup.

  38. Kitty, I miss the years when we would tear recipes out of The Dallas Morning News! Those were the days and such great recipes shared from homes.

I'm going to save this chocolate cherry cake and make it for sure. My family will love it. We have a friend who has made this a time or two and it's so moist. Can't wait!

  45. Kitty, I love the idea of breakfast in bed, but admit we have never ever done that. Perhaps we need to start something new. '-)
Oh, I'd love a slice of that chocolate cake right now. It would be the perfect late afternoon treat. The cup with its red checks and cherries is perfect with your black and white houndstooth blog border. You need to add it to your header. So nice that you two got to meet. I hope we can do the same sometime.
