Message in a Cookie

Kathleen's challenge at her Let's Dish! party for December,  was to copy a design and show our results.  My inspiration came from the December 2013 issue of Country Living. I took great liberty in copying, as you can see.  I used red buckets (my favorite color!) to hold the greenery , pine cones in tea light star holders stand in place of the bottle brush trees and hand painted wooden deer that were gifted to me years ago add some whimsy.  I didn't want to spend any $$$!

Here's the picture from the magazine.  The simplicity just appealed to me at this time in my life.

I used some plaid homespun fabric to mimic the napkin in the magazine and I used the homespun table runner that I had made earlier in the year. I bought two of these plates last year at Homegoods, as I loved the pretty, welcoming design.  Since I drink tea, I used a mug in place of the goblet.

Kathleen sent me these wonderful Message in a Cookie holiday cookie cutters and I had fun with them!  Debbie sent me the adorable Snowy Owl measuring spoon set to cheer me during my holiday baking.  Thank you Kathleen and Debbie!  Your friendship warms my heart.

The cookie cutters are so easy to work with and have interchangeable letters to spell out whatever you might want.  I think they turned out so cute!
A tried and sugar true sugar cookie recipe can be found here.

I will leave you with the icicles we had in the Dallas area.  These are hanging from my pergola and haven't melted in days.  Brrrrr!!!

I am sharing this with these lovely parties:

  1. I was just watching the news and it is -41 in North Dakota. Can you even imagine? Your icicles are so pretty ;-) I love how you copied the page from Country Living. Glad you didn't have to spend any $$! The red buckets are darling, and I like how you used the pine cones in the tea light star holders. I remember those beautiful plates from last year but never found any. That's OK since I have plenty of dishes. LOL Glad you are having fun with the Message in a Cookie holiday cookie cutters! I will play with mine this weekend. I smiled when I saw the Snowy Owl measuring spoon set in your photo ;o)

I couldn't get my act together to join you for Kathleen's challenge, but am looking forward to seeing all the wonderful entries. xo

  5. Oh my Kitty, look at that ice! It's pretty to look at, but I am sure it's must be so cold there!! I enjoyed your post today and think you did a fabulous job being a copycat :)

  7. Kitty, you did a great copy! I love those plates, too...they are so pretty. The cookies look far yummier than the icicles hanging from your pergola! It has been so cold this winter so far...not a good sign.

  15. It is fun to see how everyone's mind works. Your interpretation with what you had on hand was great. Maybe I will try next year now that I see how it is done.

Have a wonderful Christmas if I don't talk again.

  18. Simple always works for me as I take to that saying that less is more. In any case, your kitchen looks particularly cozy this week despite the icicles outside your window. We didn't get quite that cold in Houston.

  20. Love your design better than the magazine, Kitty! Those message cookie cutters are so cute, I know I'll have to look for some of those! We have also had lots of ice up here, Landon finally will be returning to school tomorrow for the first day since last Thursday, but not all the schools are going back yet. Many of the roads in the county are still icy.

  22. Hi Kitty, I love your interpretation with the festive, happy red buckets. I have been trying to find some of those dishes with the black border and the red bells and bows, because I just love seeing them on blogs! Your cookies look delicious. Don't stand under those icicles--they will eventually fall! I think of you often. Linda

  33. Brrrrr! That patio scene looks - well, to be frank, gorgeous, but miserable.
I live in Southern California and I'm a really baby when it comes to the cold.
You did a great job recreating your inspiration photo.

Could you share the giant wooden Santa on the hearth sometime? I'd love to see a close up. I have a tall Uncle Sam that appears to be in the style of your santa, and I put him out on the patio every July 4. I just love him. I think I would love a Santa like yours. Where did you get him? Please don't say a school boutique!

  34. Excellent job of recreating the inspiration photo, without copying it exactly! I hear ya on the icicles. We tried for three days to get flights that went through DFW, to no avail. Looks like we may have a tough winter here in usually mild Texas!

  35. I knew you would come up with something comforting & welcoming as your challenge, Kitty! You met the challenge beautifully.
I LOVE the little deer & I especially LOVE those plates. I looked at them recently & now kick myself for passing them up. I may have to go back.
I like the little lace edge you added to your homespun table runner, too.
I hope your holidays aren't too, too difficult for you & that you are surrounded by family & friends to keep you company as you get through these days without your sweetie. I can barely imagine how your heart aches & know that I will walk in your shoes someday as well.

    Warm Hugs,
    Rett

  37. I'm glad that writing was on the magazine copy because I wasn't immediately sure which was which. Dang, woman...you did a really great job!!! Your creation actually looks better than the magazine one!!!!!!!

I'm going to hop over and view your ham & potato soup recipe. It's been awfully cold here, and I'm trying to create lots of different soups to help keep us warm. Ham & Potato sounds like one I could definitely use this weekend while the snow is falling!

  45. Brrrr is right! It has been freezing here, but finally warmed back up today. I love your sweet cookies with a message. I can see that they would be s fun. Sweet gifts from sweet friends. I just saw those measuring spoons at a local damaged goods store. I thought they were so sweet, but I didn't need them and could not think of anyone to gift them too. I need to think towards my blog friends and not just my friends I have here at home. Your table turned out wonderful! I saw that setting in the C.L. and loved it too! Thanks for sharing with our 'Creating Christmas' party.
    hugs,
    Jann
