Blueberry Kuchen

We are having Blueberry Kuchen for our tea on the patio today.  I'm using my dishes that I purchased last year from the thrift store.  The teddy bear figurines were another thrift store find.

I'm having tea in my special mug.  I just love this Liberty stoneware pattern.

This Blueberry Kuchen recipe from my Penzey's catalogue is so tasty.  I hope you give it a try!

1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
2 t. baking powder
1 1/2 t. grated lemon peel
1/4 -1/2 t. ground nutmeg (I love freshly grated)
1/2 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. salt
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup melted butter
1 egg, beaten
1 t. vanilla
2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

Topping

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup melted butter

Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, lemon peel, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt. Add the milk, melted butter, egg and vanilla. Beat until well blended, about 2 minutes. Pour into a greased 9x13 pan.

For the topping, combine the sugar and flour. Add the butter and mix with a fork until the topping is crumbly. Sprinkle the blueberries over the cake batter and then sprinkle the topping over the blueberries. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes or until the batter is golden brown.

The flowers are from Costco and are perfect for the 4th of July!

  7. Hi Kitty, oh oh oh oh oh! I love kuchen but always think of apple kuchen. My grandmother used to make it for my dad and I would sneak into it and nibble away. No one has her recipe. She was German and never wrote down anything. I think I should try your recipe! We have a blueberry bush that is loaded and the berries are almost ripe. Love your dishes too.

  8. Hi Kitty,

How are you? Your patriotic table looks wonderful!! I really love the Liberty stoneware dishes; they're just perfect for summer. :) Love the blue and white tablecloth and the pretty pottery pitcher filled with red, white and blue flowers! I sure wish I could be there to enjoy some of your blueberry kuchen and visit with you. I've already pinned the recipe, by the way. :) I hope all is well with you -- we haven't talked in a while. Take care of yourself and have a Happy Fourth, my friend.

    Warm Hugs,

  22. I tried this recipe with our homegrown blueberries. It is delicious!!! My family ate the whole pan, so I made a pan to share with our extended family. It didn't last long. Great recipe!

  23. I didn't see any of the red, white & blue flowers at our Costco! :-( Maybe I just wasn't looking close enough. That sounds like classic me!!!

I just put some blueberries in the freezer this morning to prepare them for stashing for winter. I love blueberry cobbler and blueberry pancakes! I am willing to give this kuchen a try, too. It looks and sounds good, and I'm pretty sure I have all of the ingredients on hand already. I may have to wait awhile, though. Today is expected to reach 94 degrees with a heat index of 100+. I don't think I'll be wanting to turn that oven on! :-)

    Have a wonderful week, Kitty!
